  • Commitment to Those Who are Poor - We stand with and serve those who are poor, especially those most vulnerable.
  • Justice - We foster right relationships to promote the common good, including sustainability of Earth.
  • Stewardship - We honor our heritage and hold ourselves accountable for the human, financial and natural resources entrusted to our care.
  • Integrity - We are faithful to who we say we are.

Living Our Values

At Saint Francis Healthcare, we work every day to live our Mission to be a compassionate and transforming healing presence. Our Colleagues are committed to serve our patients with quality care and with exceptional kindness.

Each Core Value has a defined set of actions which help to keep our focus on living and serving well. It is our intention to be a blessing in each and every engagement which we undertake.

Colleagues are encouraged and expected to bring our Core Values to life in their work. They are reminded of these Values in daily reflections, orientation programs, our Code of Conduct and in regular assessments of performance.

In many cases, our Colleagues choose to serve at Saint Francis because of our Mission and Core Values. They appreciate their work as a ministry and as an opportunity to live the values which align with their personal beliefs.

While we are a community that is diverse in every way, Saint Francis Healthcare is a warm and inviting community because our Mission and Core Values defines and encourages each of us to go the extra mile: for our Patients, for our Colleagues and for the community.

Our Vision

As a mission-driven innovative health organization, we will become the leader in improving the health of our communities and each person we serve. We will be the most trusted health partner for life.

Our Commitment to the Community

Equally important to the acute healthcare services Saint Francis provides, there are the many charity programs that we sponsor. Our Saint Clare Van provides medical care to people in the community who do not have health insurance. The Tiny Steps program assists women in need who may be expecting or planning a family, and children in the first year of life. The Center of Hope reaches out to persons who may have health needs in the bilingual community. Our Cancer Outreach and Education series promotes cancer education and screenings. The Financial Assistance program helps people to receive care regardless of their ability to pay.

Through our Community Health Outreach program, Saint Francis also participates in a variety of community health fairs and activities, and we are launching a program to support parish and school nurses in their ministries.

Saint Francis continues to study the needs of the community and is completing a community health needs assessment in FY2017. This will lead to a community health improvement plan which will be used to guide future opportunities for service. We appreciate the many partnerships with community leaders and other healthcare providers which enable us to serve the people of Wilmington well, and look forward to the ways we may be called to serve in the future.

Our Patron Saint

Saint Francis of Assisi was born Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone in 1182. Growing up in a well-to-do family, he experienced a conversion, and gave up all of his belongings to love God and to serve those in need. He founded the Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of Saint Clare and the Third Order of Saint Francis.

Francis was uniquely devoted to living a simple life, and to honoring God by honoring all of creation. He believed in the incarnation of God through Jesus, but also through the ability of each of us to be the face of God for the other. Saint Francis is understood to be the first to depict a living Nativity to celebrate Christmas.

There are many powerful stories about the teaching of Saint Francis and about his commitment to promoting peace and justice for the most vulnerable and poor. Francis also traveled to Egypt in an attempt to converse with the Sultan and to bring an end to the Crusades.

At Saint Francis Healthcare, we remember our namesake on October 4th, the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi and in the ways that we try to serve the community with openness to each person and great care for those in need.
