Staying Healthy While Traveling

Brought to you by Family Medicine.

Summer is a popular time for many people to travel. If you’re planning on traveling now or in the near future, it is important to stay safe and healthy. Here are some of our favorite tips that will help your body stay healthy throughout your travels:

Keep Your Hands Clean

Traveling usually introduces you to fun, new experiences. It also can introduce you to germs that make you sick. Wash your hands after touching things that are commonly used by other people. Things like airport security bins, door knobs, and ATMs are common places that a lot of people touch. Wash your hands after touching these items. We recommend trying to clean your hands before your eat or touch your face. If you don’t have access to soap and a sink, carry hand sanitizer with you and use it when you need to.

Stock Up on Snacks

Traveling can be unpredictable. Daily excursions or restaurant plans may not always work out the way you intend. You may end up skipping a meal, delaying a meal or getting hungry earlier than expected. Carry snacks with you. We suggest having snacks that are nutritious and filling like almonds, berries or granola bars.

Find a Place to Exercise

Working out is the last thing most people think about when they’re traveling. We suggest against abandoning your workout routine! Find ways to keep your heart rate up while traveling. Whether it’s finding the hotel gym or going on a long, adventurous hike, we promise your body will thank you for giving it the exercise it needs.

Rest!

Depending on what type of trip you’re going on, it may be difficult to find time to rest. Your body needs rest and sleep to rejuvenate itself. Sleeping for at least eight hours a night while traveling will help your body stay healthy.
