Providing Comprehensive Care for Patients

Saint Francis Life Welcomes U.S. Senator Tom Carper

U.S. Senator Tom Carper shares the history of the Wilmington Riverfront with Saint Francis LIFE participants during his tour of the LIFE Center.

Saint Francis LIFE welcomed U.S. Senator Tom Carper and his staff to the LIFE Center Friday, August 4, 2017. Located on the Wilmington Riverfront, Saint Francis LIFE is a Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) that provides frail, medically complex seniors with medical and social supports to remain living independently at home.

During his visit, Senator Carper shared his top health care priorities: improving the quality of our health care system; curbing health care costs, and ensuring that more Americans and their families have access to affordable and reliable healthcare coverage. "The Saint Francis LIFE program is a vital component to the health and wellbeing of so many seniors in New Castle County," said Senator Carper. "PACE programs like this help keep seniors active, engaged, and healthy - ultimately keeping down our nations' health care costs. I hope we can expand these programs throughout Delaware to reach more of our seniors who could benefit from the good work being done here."

"We're so happy to show Senator Carper how Saint Francis LIFE has grown since its opening in 2013," said Amy Milligan, Executive Director of the program which now serves 223 New Castle County seniors. "The philosophy is that it’s better for seniors to continue living in the community as long as medically possible. LIFE's team of healthcare experts provides coordinated, comprehensive care for this vulnerable population to help them achieve this goal. The support of community leaders, such as Senator Carper, is invaluable as we strive to reach more and more seniors who can benefit from our program."

LIFE, which stands for Living Independently for Elders, is one of more than 100 PACE programs in the United States that offer this unique model of care, and the only one in Delaware. In partnership with CMS and the state's Division of Medicaid and Medical Assistance, the LIFE program serves individuals who are 55 or older; live in the New Castle County service area; are certified as needing long-term care services and supports; and can live safely at home with the support of the LIFE team. LIFE operates under the umbrella of Saint Francis Healthcare, which is a member of Trinity Health, the second largest faith-based healthcare ministry in the United States.
