da Vinci® Surgical System
Advance Surgical Technology
The da Vinci® Surgical System enables surgeons to perform even the
most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with
unmatched precision. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition
that may require surgery, you owe it to yourself to learn about all of
your medical options, including the most effective, least invasive surgical
Quicker Operations with Shorter Recovery Periods
There are three primary surgical methods: open surgery, minimally-invasive
laparoscopic surgery, and the da Vinci® Surgical System. Open surgery
involves cutting the patient open in order to perform a “hands-on”
procedure. This form of surgery is being used less and less as minimally-invasive
procedures have proven to be more effective, but they are still necessary
for certain types of conditions.
Laparoscopic procedures make use of a small, tube-like cameras that can
be inserted into the body and display a live-feed of the patient’s
internal structures on a monitor. Using this as a guide, surgeons make
small incisions in the body and insert special instruments that allow
them to operate without cutting a patient open. These operations put less
strain on the patient and shorten the recovery period.
The robotic surgery system further advances the improvements made by laparoscopic
surgery. Using a highly responsive control system, surgeons are able to
make very precise movements with minimal incisions and less blood loss
for the patient.
The following surgeries are currently available using the da Vinci®
Bariatric Surgery – Weight loss surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System is minimally
invasive and only leaves small scars. Even through open surgery, bariatric
operations are some of the most complex procedures because it can be difficult
to reach certain organs. The da Vinci system remedies this by magnifying
the area with a high quality, 3D image and allowing them to perform the
procedure with improved precision.
Hysterectomy – Traditionally, hysterectomies required surgeons to make a 6 to 12 inch
incision to remove the uterus. With the da Vinci® Surgical System,
the procedure can be done with five small incisions and significantly
speed patient recovery time.
Myomectomy - Women with uterine fibroids may be able to avoid hysterectomies as the
da Vinci® Surgical System allows for minimally invasive treatments
that can preserve the uterus. This is a valuable alternative for women
who hope to have children.
Prostatectomy – Prostatectomies using the da Vinci® Surgical System are currently the
fastest growing treatment for prostate cancer. da Vinci® surgeries
have significantly lowered rates of urinary incontinence and impotence
that frequently occur as a result of prostate removal.
Nephrectomy – Kidney removal can have side effects and usually requires a large incision
in the flank. In many cases, the da Vinci® Surgical System can remove
cancerous portions of the kidney instead of the entire organ through a
few strategic incisions.
