Emergency Care in Wilmington, DE
Shortest ER Wait Times in New Castle County
When it comes to emergency care in Wilmington, Saint Francis Healthcare
is a hospital you can count on. In a medical emergency, it is important
to have a capable hospital nearby that can assist you as fast as possible.
At Saint Francis Healthcare, we not only operate the only hospital ambulance
service in Delaware, we also have the shortest emergency room wait times,
offer Telemedicine counseling, and have been designated a Level III Trauma Center.
It is important to know where you need to go for medical care before an
emergency happens. Saint Francis Healthcare is located at:
701 N. Clayton Street
Wilmington, Delaware 19805
The emergency department is open 24/7. When patients arrive, we divide
them into one of two groups: prompt care and acute care.
Prompt care handles patients suffering from serious, but not life threatening
issues, while acute care immediately treats patients dealing with urgent
issues such as stroke or heart attack.
Meet the Emergency Staff:
- Dr. Bruce Nisbet, Medical Director
- Dr. Sandra Gibney, Assistant Medical Director
Level III Trauma Center
Our hospital has been accredited as a Level III Trauma Center. Trauma designations
describe the level of care a hospital is able to provide to patients suffering
from traumatic injuries or conditions. As a Level III Trauma Center, we
are capable of providing an advanced level of care:
- Surgeons, physicians, anesthesiologists, and medical specialists, on-call
24/7 and ready to act at a moment’s notice.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose a condition quickly and provide surgery
or intensive care as needed.
- Capable of providing backup care to smaller hospitals in the area that
are not equipped to treat a patient’s medical emergency.
- Can quickly transfer patients to a Level II or Level I Trauma Center as needed.
- Meet rigorous standards for high quality, safe care.
Additionally, we are the City of Wilmington’s only basic life support
(BLS) provider and have developed an
EMS Special Operations Unit that responds quickly to mass emergencies such as a wildfire or infectious disease.
Senior-Friendly Emergency Services
Saint Francis Healthcare has received accreditation as a Senior-Friendly
Emergency Department from The American College of Emergency Physicians
(ACEP). This certification means we are uniquely equipped to provide the
highest quality medical care for older adult patients. In addition to
clinically excellent care, our ED can ensure optimal transitions from
the Emergency Department to other settings of care, including inpatient,
rehabilitation, home care, and long-term care.
To be accredited, hospitals must be able to provide a set of key services
and accommodations for seniors, including:
- Older adult-specific, patient-focused continuing education for all staff
- Additional equipment and renovations focused on the needs of elderly patients
- Case management and social work presence in the ED to assist with care
and discharge planning
Telemedicine – Nemours CareConnect
At Saint Francis Healthcare, we strive to provide the people of Wilmington
with access to the best healthcare possible. Thanks to a recent partnership,
our young patients can now receive treatment and counsel from the pediatric
specialists at Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children through
a secure video connection called CareConnect.
Using an iPad, the expert doctors from Nemours can view our pediatric patients
and speak with them directly, allowing us to develop improved diagnostic
and treatment plans. This is an outstanding service that allows patients
to receive an advanced level of care without having to leave Saint Francis
Hospital. In the event that a patient needs to be transferred to Nemours
for more involved care, the CareConnect program makes it easier to coordinate
the patient’s movement and take all the necessary precautions.
