Residency Life

Residency training requires commitment and hard work to become an excellent
physician. A balance between residency training and recreation is necessary
to achieve the goal of being a balanced physician and person. Our hospital
is 30 minutes from Philadelphia, which offers countless cultural escapes.
Here are a few local activities that help to achieve work-life balance:
Residents Retreat: Early in the fall, residents and faculty escape to the Delaware beaches
or other area venue for a weekend of team building and fun. When at the
beach, we usually stay overnight at the University of Delaware’s
Virden Retreat Center in Lewes. But wherever we land residents are given
free time at the end of the retreat to enjoy local offerings.
Saint Francis Healthcare at the Blue Rocks: Saint Francis is a sponsor for the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Delaware’s
advanced Single-A minor league baseball team. During orientation, our
residents experience great baseball from the hospital’s reserved box.

Saint Francis Foundation 5K: Each year, the hospital sponsors a 5K run/walk at the Wilmington Riverfront,
which many residents and faculty attend. This is a great annual event
that typically attracts more than 600 runners. The riverfront is a growing
area with numerous restaurants, bars and a microbrewery.
Saint Francis Healthcare and University of Delaware Athletics: Saint Francis Healthcare is the official hospital for University of Delaware
athletics. Even if you aren’t interested in sports, the University
of Delaware, located 12 miles from the hospital, has a lot to offer.
