As we get older, our happiness depends more and more on a comfortable environment.
For many of us, this means continuing to live in our own homes. A study
done by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) showed that
90% of adults 65 and older aim to stay in their homes for as long as possible.
Seniors gain many benefits by remaining in their homes. They’re in
a familiar place with their own possessions, they can have visitors whenever
they like and they can operate on their own schedule. But they also face
several challenges, such as getting the right amount of exercise, a balanced
diet and proper medical care—all essential to aging in the healthiest
way possible. According to the National Institute of Aging, regular exercise
helps prevent falls and improve mobility. Similarly, a healthy diet can
reduce the risk of illness.
If you’re a senior in New Castle County struggling with these challenges,
you should know that there are resources to help you live your life your
way. Saint Francis LIFE is an all-inclusive care program of medical, health
and social services. LIFE helps older adults with daily physical challenges
by providing balanced meals and physical and occupational therapy. The
program also provides primary medical and nursing care at the LIFE Center
or in the home, with transportation to the center available as well. The
LIFE Center also offers social programs to help seniors create lasting
relationships with others in the community.
