Some facts about Colorectal Cancer:

  • Colorectal Cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the US.
  • Colorectal Cancer is known as the "silent disease" because many do not develop symptoms, such as bleeding or abdominal pain until the cancer is difficult to cure.
  • The possibility of curing patients after symptoms develop is only about 50%, if detected and treated early, before symptoms develop, the cure rate is higher.
  • Many polyps and cancers of the colon and rectum do not produce symptoms until they become fairly large.
  • The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 20.
  • The risk increases if there is a family history of colorectal polyps or cancer and yet higher if there is a personal history of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer.
  • The risk is higher for people with a history of extensive inflammatory bowel disease, such as Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's Disease.
