Serving the Community
In 1997, the Saint Francis Foundation was created to launch a renaissance
of new growth and momentum for the Hospital. Since then, with the generous
support of our community, the Foundation has raised over $30 million to
renovate and expand facilities, support critical outreach and prevention
programs, add state-of-the-art equipment and technology, and bring advanced
medical services to our community.
Highlights of the Foundation’s efforts include raising funds for
our premier Cardiovascular Services; renovating our private maternity
rooms including sleep accommodations for dad or birthing partner; completely
renovating and expanding the Emergency Department; and bringing the first
robotic surgical system of its kind to Delaware—the daVinci®
Surgical System. All while remaining committed to supporting critical
outreach and prevention programs like the Saint Clare Medical Mobile Outreach
Program, Tiny Steps and the Center of Hope that provide medical care to
the people in our community who need our help the most—the uninsured
Like all nonprofit organizations, Saint Francis relies heavily on philanthropy
to offset its operating costs. As an institution with a mission of providing
top quality, compassionate medical care to anyone in our community who
needs it, regardless of his or her ability to pay, those costs are substantial.
That is why your support is so important.
Saint Francis Hospital and Foundation are committed to bringing state-of-the-art
medical services to our region, while remaining true to our mission of
caring for the people in our community who need our help the most—the
uninsured and the underinsured. Through our community outreach programs,
Saint Francis extends its care beyond the walls of the Hospital reaching
into the neighborhoods of New Castle County to identify, diagnose and
treat underserved people who have limited or no options available for
primary healthcare services.
Saint Clare Medical Mobile Outreach Program
As a full-service doctor’s office on wheels, the Saint Clare Medical
Mobile Outreach vehicle travels the streets of Wilmington and New Castle
County delivering medical care to people who are homeless, less fortunate
and uninsured. Over the years, more than 80,000 patient visits have been
conducted from the Van. Every day, the staff vaccinates children who are
uninsured, dispenses medications for people with prescriptions they cannot
afford to fill, and provides ongoing medications for people with chronic
illnesses and acute medical problems.
Tiny Steps Program
The Tiny Steps Program gives the smallest, most vulnerable members of our
community a fighting chance. In a state with an alarmingly high infant
mortality rate, the Tiny Steps Program is fostering healthy pregnancies,
healthy babies and healthy families. Operating out of the Family Medicine
Center at Saint Francis Hospital and the Center of Hope on Kirkwood Highway
in Wilmington, Tiny Steps offers complete prenatal, maternity care, post
partum care, bilingual health classes, patient/parent education and counseling
to all expectant mothers, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Center of Hope
This full-service Family Medicine Center provides primary healthcare to
medically underserved people in the Wilmington-Newark area, with a special
focus on the needs of the Latino community. To ensure services are provided
in a culturally appropriate environment, a majority of the staff is bilingual
as well as understand and respect cultural differences. In addition to
medical care, the Center combines an intensive patient education program
with each visit to help reduce acute illness and promote healthy lifestyles
in an at-risk population.
