Childbirth & Baby Care Classes

Getting ready for the big day and beyond.

Whether you’re a new or experienced mother, you want the most satisfying pregnancy and birth experience possible. Classes at the Saint Francis Hospital Family Birthplace give you and your coach the information and tips you need to feel prepared. We strongly suggest that new mothers attend our entire series of classes, which includes Labor and Delivery and Buttons and Bows. And, if you plan to nurse, we also recommend our breastfeeding class.

All classes are held at Saint Francis Hospital and at the North Wilmington Women’s Center on Foulk Road.

Labor and Delivery – Childbirth Readiness Classes

Four two-hour sessions. Weekday evenings from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Cost: $60 Registration Form

Designed to provide basic information about the labor and birth process, including coping skills. The more you know and understand what to expect, the better your experience can be. Plan to register well in advance so you’ll start your first class before week 30 of your pregnancy.

This class prepares you and your coach with helpful information about:

  • The normal labor process
  • The mother/coach relationship
  • Tools such as breathing and relaxing techniques to help you and your coach during labor
  • Medical management of labor including unexpected labor events

Buttons and Bows – All About Baby

One two-hour session. Weekday evening from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Cost: $15 Registration Form

Introduces basic infant care, discusses characteristics of the normal newborn. You’ll be surprised how many new questions arrive along with your new baby. This class gives parents-to-be a valuable head start by providing a realistic picture of life after the birth of your baby.

You’ll learn:

  • How to bathe and dress your newborn
  • How to stimulate and comfort your infant
  • How to identify signs of illness
  • Normal behavior capabilities of your infant

Breastfeeding Your Baby

One two-hour session. Weekday evening from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Cost: $15 Registration Form

Introduction to breastfeeding, and the benefits of breastfeeding for the baby and mother. This optional class provides a helpful introduction to breastfeeding for mothers who plan to nurse their newborns. We strongly recommend that mothers who hope to breastfeed attend this class.

The class focuses on helping you get off to a successful start by covering topics such as:

  • Breast preparation and positioning
  • Latching on
  • Common nursing concerns
  • Factors affecting milk supply
  • Basic milk collection

Cozy Beginnings - Breastfeeding Support Group

Meetings every Monday: 10 - 11 am
Cost: Free
Location: 701 North Clayton St., 4th Floor

Facilitated by certified lactation consultants, this class will have weekly topics and will be open discussion with some door prizes.

Items Discussed:

  • Get advice on breastfeeding issues
  • Learn how to care for yourself and your baby
  • Share tips to address mother and infant care concerns
